Description

Enjoy the rich flavors of Authentic Greek Bougatsa with Creamy Custard, a traditional Greek pastry that is sure to impress your family and friends.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 4 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup semolina
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 12 sheets of phyllo pastry
  • powdered sugar for dusting


Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a saucepan, combine milk and sugar, and bring to a simmer over medium heat.
  3. Gradually whisk in the semolina and continue stirring until thickened.
  4. Remove from heat and let cool for a few minutes.
  5. Beat the eggs and vanilla extract, then stir into the cooled custard mixture.
  6. Brush a baking dish with melted butter and layer 4 sheets of phyllo pastry, brushing each with butter.
  7. Pour the custard mixture into the pastry-lined dish.
  8. Layer the remaining phyllo sheets on top, brushing with butter between layers.
  9. Score the top layer of phyllo to create portions, then bake for 30-40 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Allow to cool slightly, dust with powdered sugar, and serve warm.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add a hint of lemon zest to the custard.
  • Make sure to cover the phyllo with a damp cloth to prevent it from drying out while working.
