- 1 cup sugar
- 4 cups milk
- 1/2 cup semolina
- 3 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 12 sheets of phyllo pastry
- powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a saucepan, combine milk and sugar, and bring to a simmer over medium heat.
- Gradually whisk in the semolina and continue stirring until thickened.
- Remove from heat and let cool for a few minutes.
- Beat the eggs and vanilla extract, then stir into the cooled custard mixture.
- Brush a baking dish with melted butter and layer 4 sheets of phyllo pastry, brushing each with butter.
- Pour the custard mixture into the pastry-lined dish.
- Layer the remaining phyllo sheets on top, brushing with butter between layers.
- Score the top layer of phyllo to create portions, then bake for 30-40 minutes or until golden brown.
- Allow to cool slightly, dust with powdered sugar, and serve warm.
Notes
- For extra flavor, you can add a hint of lemon zest to the custard.
- Make sure to cover the phyllo with a damp cloth to prevent it from drying out while working.
