Description

A delicious and easy recipe for Fig & Walnut Baklava Rolls that combines the sweetness of figs and the crunch of walnuts, all wrapped in flaky phyllo dough.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups dried figs, chopped
  • 1 cup walnuts, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 package (16 oz) phyllo dough, thawed
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a large baking dish with cooking spray or a little melted butter.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped figs, walnuts, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Set aside.
  3. Lay one sheet of phyllo dough on a clean surface and brush it lightly with melted butter. Place another sheet on top and brush it again with butter. Repeat this process until you have 5 layers.
  4. Spoon a line of the fig and walnut mixture along one edge of the phyllo dough. Roll the dough tightly around the filling to form a log. Place the roll seam-side down in the prepared baking dish. Repeat with the remaining phyllo and filling.
  5. Brush the tops of the rolls with any remaining melted butter. Using a sharp knife, cut each roll into 1-inch pieces.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.
  7. While the baklava rolls are baking, prepare the syrup. In a saucepan, combine the sugar, water, honey, vanilla extract, and salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes until slightly thickened.
  8. Once the baklava rolls are done baking, remove them from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over the rolls. Allow them to cool completely in the pan.

Notes

  • For added flavor, consider mixing in a tablespoon of orange or lemon zest to the fig and walnut filling.
  • To make the baklava rolls more decadent, drizzle melted chocolate over the cooled rolls before serving.
