Description

French Onion Meatloaf is a delectable comfort dish that combines the rich flavors of caramelized onions and cheese with a hearty meat mixture.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1/2 lb (225 g) ground pork or turkey
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a skillet, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add onions and cook for 20–25 minutes, stirring often, until golden and caramelized. Add garlic and Worcestershire sauce. Cook 1–2 more minutes. Remove from heat and cool slightly.
  2. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork (or turkey), breadcrumbs, milk, egg, salt, pepper, and half of the caramelized onions. Mix until well combined.
  3. Shape the meat mixture into a loaf and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet or in a loaf pan.
  4. Top the meatloaf with the remaining caramelized onions and sprinkle cheese over the top. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 45–55 minutes, or until internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).
  5. Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

Notes

  • Ensure the internal temperature of the meatloaf reaches 160°F (71°C) for safe consumption.
  • Feel free to substitute the ground pork with ground turkey for a leaner option.
  • For added flavor, consider using different types of cheese.
