Description

Deliciously spiced spinach and onion filling wrapped in flaky pastry, Lebanese Spinach Pies are a popular Middle Eastern snack or appetizer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups fresh spinach, chopped
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 package phyllo dough
  • 1/2 cup water, for sealing

Instructions

  1. In a pan, heat olive oil and sauté the onions until translucent.
  2. Add spinach, salt, pepper, and cinnamon; cook until wilted.
  3. Stir in lemon juice and remove from heat.
  4. Lay out phyllo dough, brushing each layer with olive oil.
  5. Cut phyllo into strips and place a spoonful of filling at one end.
  6. Fold over to form triangles and seal with water.
  7. Bake in preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes.

Notes

  • Make sure to cover phyllo dough with a damp cloth while working to prevent it from drying out.
  • These pies can be frozen before baking; just add extra time when baking from frozen.
