Description

Delicious fried dough pastries that are perfect for dessert or as a sweet snack.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 2 cups vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 1/2 cup honey (for serving)


Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix well.
  2. Add the vegetable shortening and warm water, and knead to form a soft dough.
  3. Cover the dough and let it rest for about 20 minutes.
  4. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/8 inch thickness.
  5. Cut into squares or triangles.
  6. Heat the oil in a deep fryer or large skillet.
  7. Fry the cut dough pieces until they puff up and turn golden brown, about 1-2 minutes per side.
  8. Drain on paper towels and serve warm with honey drizzled on top.

Notes

  • Sopapillas are best served fresh and warm.
  • You can sprinkle powdered sugar on top for extra sweetness.
  • Experiment with variations by adding cinnamon sugar or serving with chocolate sauce.
