Ingredients

- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 2 cups vegetable oil (for frying)
- 1/2 cup honey (for serving)
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix well.
- Add the vegetable shortening and warm water, and knead to form a soft dough.
- Cover the dough and let it rest for about 20 minutes.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/8 inch thickness.
- Cut into squares or triangles.
- Heat the oil in a deep fryer or large skillet.
- Fry the cut dough pieces until they puff up and turn golden brown, about 1-2 minutes per side.
- Drain on paper towels and serve warm with honey drizzled on top.
Notes
- Sopapillas are best served fresh and warm.
- You can sprinkle powdered sugar on top for extra sweetness.
- Experiment with variations by adding cinnamon sugar or serving with chocolate sauce.
