The Classic Italian Muffuletta Sandwich is a delicious and hearty sandwich filled with a variety of meats, cheeses, and a flavorful olive salad, perfect for lunch or a picnic.

- 1 cup green olives, pitted and chopped
- 1/2 cup black olives, pitted and chopped
- 1/4 cup roasted red peppers, chopped
- 2 tablespoons capers
- 1/4 cup celery, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 round loaf of Italian bread or muffuletta bread, sliced in half horizontally
- 4 oz sliced mortadella (or substitute turkey/ham if avoiding pork)
- 4 oz sliced salami (or beef salami)
- 4 oz sliced provolone cheese
- 4 oz sliced mozzarella cheese
- 4 oz sliced ham or turkey
- Olive salad (prepared above)
Instructions
- Make the olive salad: Combine all salad ingredients in a bowl. Mix well and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (or overnight) for the flavors to develop.
- Prepare the bread: Slice the round loaf in half horizontally. Scoop out a bit of the inside to make room for the filling if needed.
- Layer the sandwich: Spread half of the olive salad on the bottom half of the bread. Layer with mortadella, salami, provolone, mozzarella, and ham or turkey. Top with the remaining olive salad. Place the top half of the bread over everything.
- Press and chill (optional): Wrap the sandwich tightly in plastic wrap. Place a heavy skillet or weight on top and refrigerate for 1–2 hours to meld flavors and compress.
- Serve: Slice into wedges and enjoy cold or at room temperature.
Notes
- For a vegetarian option, omit the meats and add more cheese or vegetables.
- Allowing the sandwich to chill helps the flavors meld together.
