Description

A delicious recipe for Caramelized Onion & Feta Flatbreads, perfect for a flavorful snack or appetizer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 cup crumbled feta cheese
  • 4 flatbreads (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1 teaspoon dried thyme)
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon honey (optional, for drizzling)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sprinkle with salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes until the onions start to soften.
  2. Add the sugar and continue to cook for another 15-20 minutes, stirring frequently, until the onions are deeply caramelized and golden brown. If they start to stick, add a splash of water.
  3. Stir in the balsamic vinegar and cook for an additional 2 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
  4. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  5. Place the flatbreads on a baking sheet. Evenly distribute the caramelized onions over each flatbread.
  6. Sprinkle the crumbled feta cheese and thyme leaves on top of the onions. Season with black pepper.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the flatbreads are crispy and the cheese is slightly melted.
  8. Remove from the oven and drizzle with honey if desired. Slice and serve warm.

Notes

  • For added flavor, consider adding sliced olives or sun-dried tomatoes on top before baking.
  • Swap out feta for goat cheese or mozzarella for a different taste profile.
