Description
A delicious recipe for Caramelized Onion & Feta Flatbreads, perfect for a flavorful snack or appetizer.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
- 1 cup crumbled feta cheese
- 4 flatbreads (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1 teaspoon dried thyme)
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon honey (optional, for drizzling)
Instructions
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sprinkle with salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes until the onions start to soften.
- Add the sugar and continue to cook for another 15-20 minutes, stirring frequently, until the onions are deeply caramelized and golden brown. If they start to stick, add a splash of water.
- Stir in the balsamic vinegar and cook for an additional 2 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Place the flatbreads on a baking sheet. Evenly distribute the caramelized onions over each flatbread.
- Sprinkle the crumbled feta cheese and thyme leaves on top of the onions. Season with black pepper.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the flatbreads are crispy and the cheese is slightly melted.
- Remove from the oven and drizzle with honey if desired. Slice and serve warm.
Notes
- For added flavor, consider adding sliced olives or sun-dried tomatoes on top before baking.
- Swap out feta for goat cheese or mozzarella for a different taste profile.
