Description

A delicious recipe for Chinese Five-Spice Duck with a sweet and tangy plum glaze.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 duck breasts (about 6 ounces each)
  • 2 teaspoons Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 cup plum sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 green onion, finely sliced (for garnish)
  • Sesame seeds (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  2. Score the skin of each duck breast in a crisscross pattern, being careful not to cut into the meat. This helps render the fat and crisp the skin.
  3. Rub the Chinese five-spice powder and salt all over the duck breasts, ensuring an even coating.
  4. Heat the vegetable oil in an oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, place the duck breasts skin-side down in the skillet and sear for about 6-8 minutes, or until the skin is golden brown and crispy.
  5. Flip the duck breasts over and transfer the skillet to the preheated oven. Roast for 10-12 minutes for medium-rare, or longer if you prefer well-done.
  6. While the duck is roasting, prepare the plum glaze. In a small saucepan, combine the plum sauce, honey, soy sauce, rice vinegar, ginger, and garlic. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, and let it cook for about 5 minutes until slightly thickened.
  7. Once the duck is done, remove it from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes before slicing.
  8. Serve the sliced duck drizzled with the plum glaze and garnished with green onions and sesame seeds.

Notes

  • For a spicier glaze, add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of sriracha to the plum sauce mixture.
  • Serve the duck with steamed jasmine rice and stir-fried vegetables for a complete meal.
