Description

Crispy Hungarian Potato Cheese Sticks are a delightful snack made from mashed potatoes, cheese, and spices, coated in breadcrumbs and fried to perfection.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese (or a mix of cheeses)
  • 1 egg yolk
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp paprika (Hungarian sweet paprika preferred)
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • Oil, for frying


Instructions

  1. Boil potatoes in salted water until tender (about 10–12 minutes). Drain well, then mash with butter until smooth.
  2. Mix in cheese, egg yolk, salt, pepper, and paprika. Stir until cheese is melted and incorporated.
  3. Let the mixture cool slightly, then stir in flour. Roll portions into stick shapes about 3 inches long.
  4. Dip each stick into the beaten egg, then roll in breadcrumbs to coat fully.
  5. Heat oil in a skillet to 350°F (175°C). Fry sticks in batches for 2–3 minutes until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels.
  6. Enjoy hot, optionally with sour cream or a tangy dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, add a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • These sticks can be made ahead and frozen before frying.
