A delicious recipe for traditional Turkish Simit bread, coated in sesame seeds for a crunchy texture.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add flour and salt, and knead until a smooth dough forms.
  3. Cover the dough and let it rise for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  4. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  5. Divide the dough and shape it into rings.
  6. Dunk each ring in a mixture of molasses and water, then coat with sesame seeds.
  7. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

  • For a crispier texture, place a pan of water in the oven while baking.
  • Simit can be enjoyed fresh or toasted with your favorite spreads.
