Description

A delightful sweet yeast bread typical of Moravian communities, often topped with a rich buttery sugar streusel.

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon


Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle yeast on top and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add melted butter, eggs, and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir to combine.
  3. Gradually add flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Punch down the risen dough and spread it into a greased pan.
  8. For the topping, mix brown sugar, flour, butter, and cinnamon until crumbly. Sprinkle over the dough.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Let cool slightly before serving.
